Amber
Amber is a fossil resin from coniferous trees containing succinic acid. Sometimes the dripping resin trapped insects, leaves, bark and other things we call inclusions. Like diamonds, true amber takes millions of years to be created. The stone in your amber ring, bracelet or pendant may be 20 million years old or more.
Amber can be highly polished and it comes in many colours. They range from the yellow and golden honey tones to reds, blues and green, as well as some opaque colours. Most common colour is brown called cognac.
Amber earned a reputation as a protective and magical stone. It is claimed that it can be helpful in throat infections, bronchial and intestinal disorders, asthma, convulsions, rheumatism, earache, bladder trouble, nerves or bone-marrow deficiencies. Calming, it can absorb negative energy and help the body to heal itself.
Taking care of your amber jewellery
Amber will not lose its beauty if you take care of it properly.
Do not expose your amber to harsh chemicals, direct sunlight or heat. Avoid perfumes and hair products when wearing amber jewellery.
To clean your amber washes it in warm water using a soft cloth and dry. If you want to restore the shine, polish with pure olive oil.
Simple tests to recognise real amber
Real amber floats in salt water.
"Hot Needle" test is most effective. Stick a heated needle into an imperceptible place in your amber. If you smell definite pine-tree resins it means it is real amber.
